Lake Ray Hubbard Dallas Rockwall

My First Memory of Lake Ray Hubbard

Personal Story: First Memory of Lake Ray Hubbard
Lake Ray Hubbard,  Collin * Dallas * Kauf
man * Rockwall

Shore LineWhen I was a young girl my dad piled all of us children into the car and off we went for an afternoon ride. Our destination was unknown to us giving our journey a certain air of mystery and intrigue. We really had no cares about what it was that lay ahead for us. We drove along for a little while to get to where we were going. Right in the midst of a massive construction site turned out to be the place we were headed for.

The road that lay ahead of us descended into the largest hole in the ground my young eyes had ever seen. Dad’s delight in the situation was fueled by our excitement when he decides to stop the car. There in the middle of the road at the bottom of a huge hole Dad comes to a complete stop. You can only imagine the excitement we had finding ourselves way below the surface of the ground and surrounded by all this incredible machinery.

All around us were these large pieces of equipment and they were busy, busy, busy. Everywhere I looked they were digging and digging. In my mind it reminds me of a Tonka town explosion. Especially since Tonka was as close to this type of machinery I had ever been. I was fascinated. Here and now Dad decides that it is time to make his big announcement.  He says to us to take a good look around and remember it because one day the road we are on will be at the bottom of a big lake. The next time we see this hole it will be filled with water. Sure enough it was and that is my first memory of Lake Ray Hubbard; I do remember it well.

Lake Ray Hubbard covers a surface area of 27,671 acres and a maximum depth of 40 feet. It sprawls across the Texas counties of Collin, Dallas, Kaufman and Rockwall. The City of Dallas oversees the reservoir. It's hard to imagine Dallas without Lake Ray Hubbard. The drive across the lake from Interstate 30 which spans six lanes across the lake is beautiful notably at sunrise and set.

The Harbor in Rockwall is a great place to go to spend the day shopping followed by dining on one of the restaurant's patio taking in the sun as it sets across the water. Various activites throughout the year are held in the Harbor. Presently, Concert on the Lake is sponsored by the city of Rockwall and held every Thursday evening from mid-May to mid-August. There is so much to share about the lake, the cities and life in general.

Stay tuned for another featured blog about life surrounding Lake Ray Hubbard.  We will take a look at living in some of the neighborhoods along the Shores of Lake Ray Hubbard. I hope you enjoyed my story. If you would like to create family stories of your own give me a call. We can put together a plan to find your home by the lake - Lake Ray Hubbard.
